The First Dojo Giga Art Exhibition
Hatsumi Sensei exhibited a selection of his paintings at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo, in February of 2017. Until the time of the exhibition, he had displayed some of them at his dojo, but this was an unprecedented opportunity for the public.
To publicize and commemorate this historic exhibition, we made a set of 13 prints. Each print was professionally designed and photographed, and printed on acid-free, archival quality paper, made to last 100 years. The printing method we used produced great results, but was only economical at large print volumes so we’ll never print these again.
Each set of 13 prints included one hand-numbered, Exhibition Print which features the date and location of Sensei's first Dojo Giga art exhibition. We only made 500 of these exhibition prints — they're sure to be prized by collectors.
After printing, we trimmed our prints to two commercial paper sizes 24 x 36 inch and A1 (594 x 841 mm). At these commercial paper sizes, nice frames can be found at great prices.
Interview with the artist
In this 2016 interview, Hatsumi Sensei discusses the paintings featured on our prints.

Sensei’s paintings don’t pull punches. Understanding his works requires knowledge of Japanese language, culture, art, religion, history and the specific traditions of his dojo. To help fill gaps our book, Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven offers an appendix with commentary, essays for context, and comments from the artist. We also offer PDF documents (one for each print) which you can download. Some of the 13 PDFs are below and we’ll post more soon. We hope these will help you enjoy your prints.
Get your prints in Dayton, Ohio
Nagato Sensei is scheduled to teach a three-day Bujinkan event in Dayton, Ohio from October 8th to 10th, 2021. Nagato Sensei has been training with Hatsumi Sensei for more than 45 years and this is the first time in 16+ years he will be returning to the US for a training event.
The event orgainizers received the last of the Masaaki Hatsumi: Art Prints — these are available for pick-up at the event (if you order in advance).
Register for the event (and learn the details about how to reserve your prints) here: https://www.bujinkanusa2020.com/
We made our prints as a Kickstarter project in 2016 and continuted to take orders until December of 2020. Masaaki Hatsumi: Art Prints are now sold out and this website will no longer take orders.
Now our prints are displayed in Japan at Hombu Dojo in Noda and private dojos worldwide, but I enjoy seeing them outside dojos best. In homes, offices, restaurants, and bars, is where people who would otherwise have no opportunity to connect with Hatsumi Sensei, can see his brushwork (and talk with our supporters to learn what it means). I consider that exposure success. Thank you for your support!
Eight of the paintings featured in our prints were featured in Masaaki Hatsumi: Dojo Giga | Heaven and we plan for the remaining four to be featured in our next book, Earth. When will Earth be available? Please watch our Earth page for updates here: dojoartbooks.com/earth/
